Emergency Department encounters
This page details the unique functionality for Emergency Department (ED) encounters in Clinical Analytics. You may also be interested in the Emergency Department grouping types or Emergency Department measures unique to this Patient Type.
Profile types
To create an ED-specific profile, select the profile type called “Internal Encounters – Emergency Department” from the Profile Type dropdown.
Profile filters
Additional profiles filters have been added for ED outpatient profiles that include Service Location Type, Service Location, Principal Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC), Principal Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and ED Physician.
Details
Additional columns for grouping by and filtering on include:
- ED Physician information (name, ID, specialty, department)
- Principal & Secondary CPT code
- Principal & Secondary APC codes
- ED Acuity Level
Clinical Case Summary
Demographics tab
The Demographics section of the outpatient Clinical Case Summary includes different views based on the patient type. For ED encounters, you can see:
- Whether the patient was admitted as an inpatient (yes/no)
- Return to ED
- ED Physician
- Service Day of the Week
- Service Location
- ED Throughput Times
- Patient Type
DRGs, Diagnosis, and Procedures tab
This tab also displays the Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APC) grouping(s) related to the patient’s case.
CPTs tab
The CPTs tab includes a table with CPT code information, including detailed information, such as time of service, place of service, charge and cost information.
Detail Services tab
The Detail Services tab provides information lookup. This tab can roll up data to the Charge Description Master (CDM) level.
Utilization
This section is omitted for outpatient encounters.
Quality and Safety
Only measures that are applicable for ED encounters appear.
Patient Satisfaction
Only measures that are applicable for ED encounters appear.
